"In a time when Shadowhunters are barely winning the fight against the forces of darkness, one battle will change the course of history forever. Welcome to the Infernal Devices trilogy, a stunning and dangerous prequel to the New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments series.
The year is 1878. Tessa Gray descends into London’s dark supernatural underworld in search of her missing brother. She soon discovers that her only allies are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters—including Will and Jem, the mysterious boys she is attracted to. Soon they find themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organization of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. Equipped with a magical army of unstoppable clockwork creatures, the Club is out to rule the British Empire, and only Tessa and her allies can stop them...."                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 -Synopsis from Goodreads
I originally started this book back in January 2013, but I couldn't get into it so I put it down. I got about 180 pages in but when I picked up again this month I started from the beginning because I couldn't remember anything that happened.  The reason I gave this 4 out of 5 is because the beginning was still slow for me the second time around. In 2013 I just put it down because I didn't want to take forever to read it but this time I pushed through and it started getting good around the 200-250 page mark. I did enjoy the beginning but it just took me a while to read because of the slow pacing in the beginning. Of course, it got really good and exciting near the end so I'm very excited to read Clockwork Prince but I hope it gets straight into the action.

Now lets talk about the characters, specifically Will Herondale. Man, these Herondales are killing me. Will is sassy, cute and really bad ass. Everything I love in fictional characters. I love the contrast in his physical features: black hair and blue eyes. *Swoons* I do admit, at times he was kind of an a-hole but I think that runs in the family (I mean Jace can be a pain in the ass sometimes too). The beef between Will and Gabriel Lightwood was surprising to me, considering how (possible spoiler??) their families will come together in the future (end of possible spoiler). I don't really know how I feel about Tessa yet, but so far she's ok. She was kind of annoying at times but hey I get annoyed with a lot of female characters.

Now onto Jem Carstairs. WHAT A CUTIE PATOOTIE. He's so sweet and caring and I just want to go give him a huge bear hug. Even though he can be pretty badass at times I just want to lock him in the institute and keep him safe bc of his petite probleme. Not going to say what it is because thats a spoiler! soz, you gotta read the book to find out :)

Cassandra Clare is probably one of my favourite authors ever. Her world building and character development and her plot twists (OH GOD) are amazing. I totally was not expecting the plot twist near the end of the book about a certain character. Like WTF CASSANDRA??????? This book was just so good even though the beginning was slow. (and yes I know I kind of spoiled myself by reading City of Heavenly Fire without reading The Infernal Devices... but learn from me!! READ TID BEFORE COHF!!! Don't make the same mistake I did)

QUOTES:

“One must always be careful of books," said Tessa, "and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us.”

“Will looked horrified. "What kind of monster could possibly hate chocolate?”

“You know," Gabriel said, "there was a time I thought we could be friends, Will."

"There was a time I thought I was a ferret," Will said, "but that turned out to be the opium haze. Did you know it had that effect? Because I didn't.”

“A little girl robbed you?" Tessa said.
"Actually, she wasn’t a little girl at all, as it turns out, but a midget in a dress with a penchant for violence, who goes by the name of Six-Fingered Nigel." [said Will]
"Easy mistake to make," Jem said.”

“Sometimes, when I have to do something I don't want to do, I pretend I'm a character from a book. It's easier to know what they would do.”

“Oh, I can never get enough. Which, incidentally, is what your sister said when--”

“They're still looking at him.... At Will..."
"Of course they are.... Look at him. The face of a bad angel and eyes like the night sky in Hell.”
