"Lola Nolan is a budding costume designer, and for her, the more outrageous, sparkly, and fun the outfit, the better. And everything is pretty perfect in her life (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the negihborhood. When Cricket, a gifted inventor, steps out from his twin sister's shadow and back into Lola's life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door." -Synopsis from GoodreadsThis book guys, holy moly.. Stephanie Perkins never fails to write a cute contemporary with really funny characters. I've never read about any character like Lola. She was so unique and I really liked how she knew exactly who she wanted to be and how she wanted to present herself. The idea of dressing in costume everyday sounds like a lot of planning but Lola has some really cool outfits to choose from. At times I was quite bothered with how she treated the people around her because she was pretty selfish sometimes, but other than that I really enjoyed her character.
Now onto Cricket. Boy oh boy. At first I was like "meehhh Crickets ok.." but by the end I was like "YAS CRICKET I LUH YOU". ahh he's so cute and I love his fashion. He always wears coloured rubber bands on his wrist and wears these pinstripe pants that are rolled up at the end. He's super tall and lanky so him and Lola make a really interesting couple, but I love it.
I also really loved Lola's parents and how they were a pretty big part of the story. A lot of times in young adult books we never even hear about the characters parents, but Lola's dads were in the book quite a bit. I love Lola's dads and how they were different but made an amazing couple.

“I don't believe in fashion. I believe in costume. Life is too short to be same person every day.”
“What just happened?"

"Yeah, that's what I thought.”
“History books are filled with lies. Whoever wins the war tells the story.”

I'm so glad you enjoyed this book. I love that in Stephanie Perkins' novels that I can relate to her every character even if they are totally different from me. And well let's not forget that she created Étienne and Cricket (who names their kid after a disgusting bug?) and Josh.
ReplyDeleteLovely review. :)
